FAQ

How do I select a veterinarian?
When choosing a veterinarian to care for your pet, consider the following:

Does the vet have the appropriate credentials and experience to treat your pet?
Does he or she specialize in the type of animal you have? At Boca Midtowne Animal Hospital we treat dogs, cats, and pocket pets (gerbils, guinea pigs, rodents, and some reptiles).
Does he or she spend appropriate time with your pet and answer your questions satisfactorily?
Do the facilities look and smell clean?
Do you and your pet "connect" with the vet and his or her staff?
Is your vet available at all times? Dr. Werthaiser encourages clients to call him to discuss their concerns regarding their pets.

What should I expect with a new puppy or kitten?
During the first year of your pet's life, veterinary care is very important.

First Visit: It is a good idea to take your pet to the vet the first day he/she comes home. Your vet can examine your pet for any existing conditions including parasites, and set a schedule for future care.

Under Four Months: Your puppy will need a series of vaccines during this period.

Four to Six Months: Puppies and kittens require a variety of vaccinations during their first four months, after which time the first rabies vaccine can be administered.

Six Months to One Year: Your puppy will not visit the vet as frequently during this period and after one year, he or she likely will only need to visit the vet for an annual wellness exam.

When should I have my pet neutered?
At six months, your pet can be spayed or neutered, if you wish. With the number of unwanted dogs born each year, it is a responsible decision that many people make. Additionally, neutering reduces the incidence of breast cancer and other reproductive diseases.

Do I need to vaccinate my cat if he or she never goes outside?
Many viruses are airborne and as such can reach your pet inside your home. It is important to vaccinate all your pets regardless of whether they are "indoor" or "outdoor" animals. Additionally, you are required by law to vaccinate your dog or cat for rabies.
